On November 21, 1963, President John F. Kennedy attended a reception in Houston, Texas sponsored by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). That night is widely recognized as the first time a US president acknowledged Latinos as a significant voting bloc. Just fifteen hours after his historic visit in Houston, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. This exhibition was curated to commemorate the 60th anniversary of this historic evening in American history.

This exhibit invited patrons to experience the sights and sounds of Houston’s Latino music history through the decades. From the heydays of the Shamrock Hotel to nights at the Pan American, the exhibit reflected a diverse and significant contribution to Houston music.

The power of the Latino vote today has its roots in Hispanic civic engagement of the pre-World War II era. This selection of archival materials paid tribute to the long history of Latino civic engagement in Houston and hoped to inspire a new generation of Houstonians.

World War II was a major turning point for Latinos as the war offered a space to display their allegiance and patriotism on and off the battlefield.  This exhibit reflected the experiences of and paid homage to Houston’s Latina and Latino veterans of the Second World War.

That night is widely recognized as the first time a US president acknowledged Latinos as a significant voting bloc. Just fifteen hours after his historic visit in Houston, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He spent his last night with a group of Mexican American civil rights activists. Those seventeen minutes at the Rice Hotel live on as a key historical moment for LULAC and Mexican Americans.
